Overview...

  • For over 14 years and with tens of thousands of satisfied customers worldwide, DBMS/Copy has been the tool of choice for auditing data and transferring files between software programs.

  • DBMS/COPY directly reads and writes the native binary files of over 90 packages and runs in Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, 2003, XP and also Unix. If you are using Windows 3.1 though, you will need a V6 license.

  • Since no intermediate files are created, DBMS/Copy’s database audit and file transfers are both fast and clean. In addition, you get record filters, variable sub-setting and powerful computational capabilities that for example could add sequential numbers, create new derived fields, convert array data into bit-arrays (0/1) fields. Since DBMS/Copy specialises in transferring data, it takes care of the hassles including dissimilar numeric types, date variables, time variables, null value and variable name truncation.

  • The typical problems with free and fixed format ASCII files not matching supplied dictionaries disappear with the interactive ASCII Data Dictionary builder.

  • The Spreadsheet Grabber enables you to visually grab data from anywhere within the spreadsheet.

  • Complex SQL queries can be created with the friendly ODBC query builder.

  • Your productivity will increase by using the built-in batch processing to automate repetitive transfers.

  • A Free license for DBMS/Explorer (the cross-tab and audit software) is included with every purchase of DBMS/Copy.

  • DBMS/Copy is your solution for auditing and transferring data!

  • For database comparison, use DBMS/Compare

DBMS/Copy's powerful features...

Auditing and transferring data Is just the beginning

Audit your Data!

Key to any data improvement, analytical or targeting project is to know that the data you expect to be using is in fact what you are using. That the values or codes in the fields are correct and that the number of missing values is acceptable.

The Data Information routine will generate a spreadsheet of general statistics, minimums, maximums, percentiles and discrete values for every variable. It's a great first step when analysing data.

Also, where you need to band value ranges into category bands, the statistics results give you the data spread so that you can set ranges appropriately.  To extend data audit, you can use DBMS/Explorer for drill-down cross-tabs and dynamic charting and for database comparison, use DBMS/Compare.

See The Data!

Why transfer blind? See the database before you do the transfer! DBMS/Copy is a great database viewer! You’ll even see the effects of record selection and new variable computation.

Variable Control and Sorting

Why transfer every variable when you only want a subset or a specific variable order? You can drop, keep or specify the order of variables and in addition, take control of all aspects of the transfer including variable names, types, length, label and format. It couldn’t be easier!  The "Shrink Sizes" button determines the minimum field size for variables.

Select Records and Create New Variables

Want to transfer only a set of records? Need to add a new variable? Want to manipulate character variables? DBMS/Copy enables you to select or exclude records based on any criteria - simple or complex.

DBMS/Copy’s computational power exceeds most database and statistical analysis packages! Computations can include assignment and if-then-else statements, sophisticated expressions and access to our large library of over 100 math, trig, financial probability, financial, and character functions.

The interactive equation builder creates an environment where building the record filters and new variables is easy and user friendly. The available variables, functions and statements are all just a mouse click away. For repetitive transfers, the equations and database names can be saved to disk and with all transfers you can specify a simple or nested sort order for the output file.

ASCII Data Dictionary Builder

Interactively define the fields on the ASCII text file. Supports both Fixed format and Free format files. The associated data dictionary created when defining an ASCII file can also be configured to ignore NULL characters and HEX 1A (end of file markers) or skip N lines from a file etc.

Spreadsheet Grabber

DBMS/Copy can handle spreadsheets where the data and variable names are anywhere in the worksheet. Just use the mouse to define the data area and variable name rows.

Remember, the ASCII Data Dictionary Builder allows you to view, select, and label blocks of data direct on screen prior to conversion. This ensures data accuracy and that any errors in accompanying file documentation are correctly interpreted - eliminating the wasted days of analysing incorrectly defined files.

You can see the effects of record and variable selection and new variable computation before transfer. You also get record filters, variable sub-setting and powerful computational capabilities exceeding most database and statistics packages - you can include "if statements", sophisticated expressions and access over 100 functions. And a spreadsheet grabber enables you to grab data from anywhere within a spreadsheet.

Features

 DBMS/COPY

DBMS/Explorer

Free license for DBMS/Explorer is included.

Spreadsheet Grabber

Manual entering of the data range and variable name rows. Of course you can still use the mouse.

Microsoft Access Direct Support

Access is now on the list of packages. Just select the Access File type, find your Access database and open it. DBMS/COPY can now also create Access databases on output and overwrite existing tables.

ODBC Speed Faster

The ODBC support for SQL packages (Oracle, Sybase, Informix, DB2, for example) is significantly faster. We have seen speed increases of factors of 8 to 40 times. One user has a 100 times increase in speed.

ODBC Table Overwrite

Previously, DBMS/COPY only wrote to new tablenames.  Now it can overwrite existing tables.

On-line Documentation

The entire DBMS/COPY and DBMS/Explorer manual set is now available as part of the help system. The help system uses the 32-bit version of the Windows help system.

Value Labels

Values labels from SAS, SPSS and Stata can be read and written. When you move a dataset with value labels to a package which doesn't support value labels, you have DBMS/COPY create new variables containing the formatted values.

ASCII Data Dictionary Builder

For free format files, DBMS/COPY will scan the ASCII file to determine the variable types and maximum lengths.

New and Enhanced Packages

Excel

Read and write Excel 2000.

SAS

Up to Version 8. Read and write SAS for Unix included now included at no additional charge. Read SAS for VAX/VMS at no additional charge.

SAS Value Labels

We had an experimental release of support of SAS Value labels in DBMS/COPY V6, now it is official.

Oracle, Informix & ODBC

For SQL based packages including Oracle, Informix, Sybase and others, DBMS/COPY uses ODBC. DBMS/COPY has a built-in query builder for reading packages with ODBC drivers.  (Microsoft Access is now on the list of supported packages.)  When writing to a package with an ODBC driver, DBMS/COPY will create the table.
DBMS/COPY for Windows95/98/NT/2000/XP can also append records to an existing table or replace a table.
