Interactive Analysis
Navigation is an
important part of Cognos Visualizer. Users can pan and rotate displays
on the screen, and zoom in and out, effectively "flying" around the
displays of information—stopping only at those viewpoints that require
further analysis.
In addition the user's
ability to navigate freely within any visualization, Visualizer allows
designers to build predefined, custom navigation that can be included
within visualizations.
Viewpoints and
Animations. Cognos Visualizer navigation includes predefined
viewpoints and animations. Users can select from among named viewpoints
provided with any visualization, and play animations that step them
through key viewpoints. At any point, users can take complete control
of the display, using an intuitive navigation panel to explore specific
aspects of a visualization.
Dynamic
Filtering. Visualizations can include filters that allow users
to display only a subset of the underlying data. A particularly
powerful filter is a time-series animation, which enables users to
"play" a time-series sequence one period at a time. With this
technique, users quickly observe trends and patterns unfold.
Drill Through to
Details. Navigation extends beyond the dashboard to the
underlying information in various detailed reports. Drill through to
details is seamless, and automatically invokes the kind of underlying
report a user needs—an explorable OLAP report, detailed transactional
data in a managed report, or an ad hoc query.

Robust Authoring
Visualizations are
created in Cognos Visualizer on the desktop, running on Windows 95,
Windows NT, or Windows 2000. Visualization designers use a panel
and sheet-based environment to deliver whatever kinds of
visualizations are required, from dashboards that deliver
"at-a-glance" overviews of underlying visualizations, reports, and
analyses, to sophisticated graphical displays of key performance
indicators.
Visualizations can
include multiple panels and sheets, each of which can be associated
with a different data source, and all of which can be synchronized
with one another. Each panel can display advanced graphics like
Swatch, Value, and Parallel Coordinate charts that respond
collectively to user interactions.
For all chart types,
color has more than a simple aesthetic purpose; it provides a way
to convey visually what's important in your data. Users can choose
from different color palettes, gradients and scales to deliver
critical information. For example, a typical "Red, Yellow, Green"
color scheme can immediately convey Poor, Mediocre, and Good
performance. |

Robust Deployment
Cognos Visualizer
Series 7 enables enterprise deployment via Internet, intranet and
extranet environments. The IT department can confidently deliver
corporate dashboards to the entire enterprise. If your
infrastructure demands it, you can post visualizations on a
corporate LAN or WAN for users to access using Cognos Visualizer in
Windows. For Web deployments, Cognos Visualizer Web provides a
scalable server that delivers visualizations to users via their
browsers.
Cognos Visualizer is
completely integrated with key technologies, including the open,
customizable
Cognos
portal, and the
Cognos
common security component. Access to visualizations and data
within visualizations can be controlled based on user classes. The
same user classes control a user's ability to publish
visualizations to public and personal NewsBoxes within the portal,
depending on their access privileges. This security extends across
all Cognos Business Intelligence servers and components, providing
centralized control while minimizing deployment and administration
costs. |

End-to-End Business Intelligence
From data extraction
to data mart creation through to the delivery of reports, analysis,
and scorecarding, Cognos delivers a complete Business Intelligence
solution.
Let Users Drill into Details

Deliver an Integrated, End-to-End Solution
An enterprise BI
system delivers the highest ROI if it's coordinated across
departments and all data sources. That means corporate dashboards
must bring together coordinated information in all reports,
analyses, and queries, and provide consistent data to all users
across the organization. To achieve this, Cognos provides:
-
Cognos DecisionStream. Build and deploy linked, subject-area
data marts that lay the foundation for an integrated Business
Intelligence (BI) system.
-
Cognos Upfront. Administrators and users can publish
visualizations to Upfront, the Cognos portal. Upfront's open XML
API and customizable user interface templates enable the
integration of Cognos Business Intelligence into existing
applications.
-
Cognos
Access Manager. Centrally administer access to published
visualizations, and to all Cognos BI content. Access Manager's
LDAP-based security provides centralized user class definitions
for controlled access to all BI and non-BI content.
