Three-Layered Architecture...
The complexity of developing an open multi-agent system is equivalent to the process of developing a small computer operating system. The implementation of a system with even minimal self-organisation and evolution, based on long, multiple, dynamic chains of interaction and negotiation, is a very complicated task. To achieve these goals, MagentA Corporation has developed a three-layered architecture consisting of:

Layer
One - a generic
MagentA
Engine, which includes proprietary self-contained, multi-agent run-time
environment, with all the appropriate tools required to rapidly construct
systems and applications.
Layer
Two - a domain-specific
MagentA
Ontology which, combined with the MagentA Engine, forms a
vertical-market specific MagentA System (eg,
MagentA Logistics System or
MagentA
e-Commerce System).
Layer
Three - an application-specific MagentA Ontology which, combined with the
MagentA Engine and a vertical-market specific MagentA System, forms a highly
customised MagentA Application for specific customers.
For example, the MagentA Healthy Diet Management Application, would consist of (1) a standard MagentA Engine with some appropriate extensions, (2) the e-Commerce MagentA Ontology and (3) the company specific health food MagentA Ontology.
This architecture allows a rapid development of highly customised applications. The generic engine and vertical-market specific systems are developed by MagentA staff, whilst application specific ontology may be developed by MagentA value added resellers (VARs) or even customers themselves.
MagentA systems are open; they can be integrated with existing databases, using COM and XML technologies. CORBA/COM interfaces are supported and XML is the standard for information exchange.
